Lexmark X940e Toner Cartridge Replacement Guide

  1. Verify that the printer is turned on and that a "READY" or "REPLACE" notification appears on the printer's control panel.
  2. Open the printer's front door.
  3. Carefully turn the toner cartridge that needs to be replaced counterclockwise until the arrow points at the unlock icon.
  4. Once unlocked, carefully pull the toner cartridge out of the printer.
  5. Get your new CompAndSave Lexmark X940e cartridge. Open the cartridge over a sink or garbage can to avoid any messes in case of a powder leak, as sometimes, factories tend to overfill toner cartridges. Avoid touching the bottom part of the toner, then remove the covering tape that is usually bright in color as well as the plastic protective case, if there is, before installing it.
  6. Align the arrow on the toner cartridge with the unlock symbol, then carefully insert it into the printer. Turn the toner cartridge clockwise until the arrow points at the lock symbol.
  7. Close the printer's front cover.

Lexmark X940e Toner Cartridges FAQs

Do laser toners dry out?

Toner cartridges are powder-based and not liquid-based. This means that they do not dry out as the powder inside is already dry. But if a toner cartridge was not used for a long time, there's a possibility that the toner powder is not evenly distributed inside. This can cause uneven prints and smudges. To resolve this issue, you may shake the toner cartridge sideways to distribute the toner powder evenly. Can I throw away empty toner cartridges?

About 1.3 billion cartridges are used every year. That is why it is highly preferred that toner and ink cartridges are recycled than letting them end up in landfills. You can bring your empty toner to local or big retailers or even to your local recycling facility. You can also check some websites online, like earth911.com, to look for recycling options for your cartridges.

What is the difference between original and compatible toner cartridges?

OEM or Original Equipment Manufactured cartridges are toner cartridges that are made by the same company that manufactured the printer. Compatible toner cartridges, on the other hand, are produced and filled by third-party companies. The parts used are brand new and are not recycled from OEM toner cartridges. The same procedure applies to compatible ink cartridges. Both provide the same quality of printouts, but the compatibles may surpass the OEM and are sold at a much lower price.
