How do I change the toner on my Brother HL-2040?
- Ensure that your printer is on.
- Lower down the printer's front cover to open it. Leave it as is for 10 minutes before you proceed for the printer to cool down.
- Take out the drum unit with the empty Brother HL-2040 toner cartridge from your printer.
- Remove the toner out of the drum unit by pushing down the lock lever.
- Get your new Brother 2040 toner and gently rock it six times from side to side to evenly spread the toner powder.
- Unpack the cartridge over a sink or garbage can to avoid any mess in case of a powder leak, as sometimes, factories tend to overfill toner cartridges. Avoid touching the bottom part of the toner, then remove the covering tape that is usually bright in color as well as the plastic protective case, if there is, before installing it.
- Insert the new Brother HL-2040 printer toner into its drum until you hear a click sound, indicating that it is locked in place.
- Before installing your Brother toner and drum into the printer, clean the drum unit's corona wire first by gently sliding the blue tab from left to right and vice versa several times to avoid vertical stripes in printed pages.
- Install the drum unit with the Brother HL-2040 laser printer toner in it into the printer.
- Close the printer's front cover. Do not open the front cover nor turn off your printer for 5 seconds after replacing your toner.

Briefly, I have an older Brother MFC-7420 printer. Over the years, I've replaced the drum, cartridge and bought toner for it. A few months ago, I had messages on the printer that the drum unit needed replacing; I bought a new drum. Then I was receiving messages that the drum cartridge needed replacing, so I bought a cartridge from you. Then the message told me that I needed toner. I assumed that there was already toner in the hi-yield cartridge, right? I have since ordered a new Brother printer online that is in back-order status. The cartridge I purchased has not resolved the problem. As I say, this is an older model Brother printer, and it is developing some glitches in addition. Thank you for your follow-up.
