To recap, we at CompAndSave are collecting empty ink and toner cartridges by asking that you mail cartridge donations to our headquarters in Newark, California which are then sent on to GreenHippo.com, an e-waste recycling company located in LA, CA.

We’ll often find these words on the front of a little green bin urging us to recycle. Often it’ll be paper, cardboard boxes, water bottles and other similar items. What people often forget about though, is that their printer’s cartridges can also be recycled! While you can’t just through it the bin, you can send off your empty ink and toner cartridges to local recycling centers or online shops like GreenHippo.

There is no doubt that plastics, and their various applications, have revolutionized the way we live. It has increased our comfort and convenience manifold. Yet, it is also a fact that the disposing of plastics presents one of biggest challenges of modern living. Discarded cartridges ending up in landfills, is no solution. So what is? And how can your used cartridges help feed the poor? Recycling and our Fundraiser As a company we are environmentally conscious, and are always striving to make a difference to the problem of plastic waste disposal.

Here’s a food for thought for you: about a trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year. An average American family takes home about 1,500 plastic bags a year - and about 100 billion are thrown away in the U.S. alone each year. Did you know about 12% of the 254 million tons of waste contain plastic? So clearly, we as a community need to find a way to deal with plastic effectively.

It is estimated that about 1.1 billion printer cartridges are used up each year. Approximately 70% of used printer cartridges simply get tossed into the trash. In the United States alone, about 8 cartridges are thrown away each second. Experts surmise that a cartridge takes up to a thousand years to biodegrade. Each new cartridge is made using about 3 pints of oil. Only a fraction of the cartridges are recycled; a vast majority end up in landfills.

CompAndSave’s goal is to collect and recycle 10,000 empty printer cartridges, and donate every cent raised to Food For the Poor Non-Profit to feed the Hungry.
